SAPCC #21 – Rapture

When I think “rapture,” I think of this guy I used to know.  His family was from Indiana & his parents were Evangelical Christians.  They were the first to mention the Rapture to me as they cleaned the giant horseshoe crab carcasses/shells they picked up on the beach.  They were bringing the crabs back to the farm for the Rapture because ”the farm is the only place that will be saved when Jesus returns.”

Now, I am not quite as sacrilegious as these photos may suggest.  I consider myself spiritual & believe in a higher being (sometimes… the whole dad dying thing made it a little tough). I do not, however, believe in overly organized religion because I am not a fan of hypocrisy.  Here is a quick story… I was waitressing one day after “Passion of the Christ” was released.  There was a party of six at my table gushing over it, “I cannot believe the things Jesus was subjected to…”  “It makes my faith so much stronger…”  In between the rave reviews and comments about wanting to be better Christians, one of the women flipped out on me because her tuna sandwich was served on toast (as stated in the menu) & not “regular” bread.  I was so dumbfounded by the irony that I did not even fight back.   It’s funny that most of the morally just, good people I know are not too into religion either.

Having chosen not to try to pick up a shift because of the crappy weather, I felt obligated to devote some time to rapture.  Once again, I wanted to put blood in the snow.  This time, I had the blood but it just burnt holes in the snow.  Next time, I need to add flour.

  1. Great photos. It’s a little disturbing I must admit.

  2. I’ll take disturbing… Thank you.

  3. No, that is Very disturbing but I don’t sway easy! The first and third shots are the best but my favorite is the third shot. You gotta love a girl that’s into fake blood!

Also, as a former waiter, your story pissed me off. I would have gotten the menu and pointed it out to that bitch and then reminded her not to be so rude to people that prepare your food. This is why I can’t serve anymore.

  4. Wow! I know very little about this religious rapture but I’m guessing blood is involved?? I knew I was an unbeliever for intellectual reasons but this suggests there are some safety issues as well!! Your facial expression slays me!

  5. assign this girl to Hollywood special effects NOW please! Wow. freakishly real. Especially the cut wrist. I hope no neighbors came over during your blood playing.

  6. I don’t really think there is any blood involved in Rapture. I was just thinking of Rapture as a highway to Heaven. When I started editing my pics, I selected these for the story. The story to me is of someone wanting their Rapture before the Rapture… It’s like the song “To Heaven I Go” by Snowball 37. I was also thinking of “Jesus Camp.” I like extremes :)

  7. Russ, the first shot was a blessing. I used the flash around 430pm outside. The background is my blacktop driveway with snow it… looks like Heavenly clouds.

  8. This is freaking me out. Totally agree with Russ – 1st and 3rd are the most powerful. Very compelling…and reminds me why I have no desire to visit a church (other than to photograph it).

  9. Oh, I forgot to shoot a church :(

  10. Powerful. I don’t find them disturbing, because emotionally (not in a religious sense) I have been there- pics 4 and 5 looked very familiar and almost beautiful. Guess I’m a weirdo, but I’m OK with that. I’m alive and well.

    Thanks for these.

  11. Amanda, thank you for visiting. I was much more disturbed by “Jesus Camp” than I was by my fake blood :)
